The teacher had been there….Sam knew it, even though he wasn’t paying really close attention to the Civil War lecture. There was the boring, drawling one about the battle of Gettysburg then, there was just…silence. Sam blinked for a second, then blinked again as he stared at the spot where the teacher had stood. He looked around the classroom and the students were in a state of disbelief, as if they couldn’t believe their eyes.
“Okay, where did Mr. Smith go?” Anna asked, raising an eyebrow. The question broke the confused silence and students in the class room broke into nervous laughter.
Sam shrugged, “Maybe he’s playing a joke on us? Maybe there’s something going on that we don’t know?” He stood and turned to the kids and blinked, seeing the empty seat behind him, “Hey….where’s Quinn?”
Anna blinked, following Sam’s eyes to the seat, “I didn’t see him get up..?”
Sam shook his head, “Neither did I…and I didn’t see Mr. Smith leave either.”
Way in the back, a boy piped up, “They just poofed man!” The class burst into giggles, believing it to be a joke until a girl wailed, holding her bright pink phone above her head.
“MY PHONE DOESN’T WORK!!!”
At once the giggles of the class broke into frantic panicking as the kids pulled out their phones and checked.
“Mine doesn’t work either!”
“There’s no answer!”
“I have a signal but nothing’s going!”
“There’s no internet!!!”
“Try 911!!”
“That’s not working either!”
The students were out of their seats now, frantically rushing to other people, to see if they were getting different results than they were, but everything was the same.
Anna’s eyes were widened and she brought her hand to her mouth, “There’s something weird going on….and I don’t know what!”
Sam nodded in agreement and opened his mouth to say something when there was a loud crash from outside, and the class froze as they looked toward the door. Sam slowly opened it and blinked as kids filtered into the hallway, looking around in confusion. Other classes of the middle school were there too, and there was pure and utter silence as the kids stared at each other, confusion and fright in their eyes. Sam looked toward another little kid and bit his cheek, “Where’s your teacher?”
“We don’t know….she just disappeared!” One of the littler ones answered.
Then the bell rang, like a bullet through the school. The kids flinched as they looked up to it, but all that happened were just a few more kids in the hallway filtered in. They were all scared, and the voices suddenly grew as loud as thunder. Sam winced, hearing that many people in one spot and quickly backed out and back into the room.
Something had happened in Perdido Beach. Something terrible, and Sam hoped, no, prayed that it wouldn’t get worse.
